About the Miracle League

The Miracle League at Cypress Mounds

The Miracle League at Cypress Mounds is a non-profit organization that makes it possible for children with mental and physical disabilities to achieve the same dream as their healthy peers – to play baseball as part of a team in an organized league!  These children get a reprieve from their daily challenges as soon as they step or roll on to the ball field.

The location of our field within the Ripken-designed baseball complex at Cypress Mounds allows our players to experience so much more than just Miracle League baseball.  They play the game alongside 9 other fields of Little League players and are a part of the baseball community.  The field closely mimics all other fields at Cypress Mounds with features such as warning tracks, foul poles, custom designed dugout benches and helmet and at racks.  It has a cushioned synthetic turf with painted bases and baselines that allows children in wheelchairs and walkers to glide unrestricted to their positions without fear of injury.  In other words, it provides a level playing field where children with physical and mental disabilities can hit, run, and catch – just as they envisioned in their dreams.

History of the Miracle League Association

The Miracle League got its start with a boy in a wheelchair who was invited to play in a youth baseball program.  The Rockdale Youth Baseball Association in Georgia decided to organize games for players with special needs in response to that event.  This idea was extremely well received by the players and their families but it became evident that the conventional baseball fields were inadequate for these players.  A specialized field was designed so that kids could move around easily and safely.  This became the first Miracle League Field.  The program was designed to be a non-competitive league where “buddies” assisted players during the game and formed bonds with them that would last a lifetime.  Each player gets a hit… each player scores… both teams win.  The idea for this program spread quickly and new fields started to be built all over the country.  Due to the incredible popularity of The Miracle League, there are 255 Miracle League Organizations across the USA, Puerto Rico, Canada, and Australia.

Parents tell stories of their children insisting on playing despite kidney stones, broken bones, and recent hospitalizations. The Miracle League became a safe-haven from the everyday battles they faced. For a short time they can forget that they are different because on that field they share a common love – baseball.
